This is the southernmost district of Karnataka state also an interstate link to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Chamrajnagar consists of mainly semi-arid rain dependent plains beside the forested hills. The district cityy is also known as “Granite City”. Earlier, the city was known as “Arikottara”. Thereafter the place is named Chamarajanagar, after Chamaraj Wodeyar IX (1774-1796) the king of Mysore, who was born in the town. The district was inaugurated on 15th August 1997, till then Chamrajnagar district was a part of Mysore district. In the year 1117 A. D., Chamrajnagar was under the rule of Hoysala king Gangaraja later was under Vijayanagara Empire during 15th and 6th centuries. And in the early 18th century, Chamrajnagar came under the rule of Wodeyars of Mysore.
The district is well known for its famous silk industries and tourist spots, attracting the travellers.
