Is the cultural capital of Karnataka. Formerly, this city served as the capital of Mysore kingdom. Founded in 1339, the vessel state of Mysore was ruled by Vijayanagara Empire till 1646. The Nayaka kingdom declared independence and ruled it until the mid of 18th century and then crown of the kingdom was passed on to the defacto ruler Hyder Ali. Hyder and his multilingual son, Tippu Sultan took the military powers of Mysore to its extremes. Tippu, finest administrator, who was also fluent in six languages including English and French, invented the metal rockets which he later used against British. After the death of Tippu Sultan in 1799, Wodeyar were placed by the British on the throne of Mysore. Wodeyar dynasty played an important role in shaping Mysore into one of the finest cities with sovereign status.
Mysore is well known for its royal palace, paintings, mysore-silk and mysore-pak. This district holds a good number of tourist destinations. The must see list includes – Mysore Palace, Raja Ravivarma’s paintings in Venkatappa Art Gallery, Chamundi Hill, Vishweshwarayya Museum, Krishnarajasagara Dam,Kukkarahalli Lake and Mysore Zoo.
Dasara, a festival of Karnataka, which is celebrated over a period of 10 days during the month of October, is a famous attraction for the tourists. Mysore is well-connected by road to Bangalore, Mangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Ooty, Kozhikode, Kannur and Panaji (Goa). Various means of transport are Bus, Auto Rickshaws and Tongas.
