Assamese Handloom Weaving

In Assam, weaving is a living cultural expression passed down across generations, mostly by women, who weave the mekhela sador, the gamosa and household textiles at home and in village clusters.

The technique

Motifs are woven in on the loom with the bona (extra-weft pick-up) technique: the weaver counts warp threads with a bamboo needle and builds each pattern row by row. Cotton, hand-spun Khadi and Eri (Ahimsa) silk are woven on throw-shuttle, fly-shuttle and jacquard frame looms.
