About this journey
A city that builds a hundred temporary cathedrals, then gives them all back to the river.
Five days inside the largest public art festival in the world. We begin in Kumartuli, the idol-makers' quarter, where the goddess is still being built in Ganges clay and straw. Then the pandals — vast temporary pavilions commissioned from artists and architects, each a complete built world that will exist for four days and then be taken apart. We walk them at the hours when Kolkata actually walks them, which is to say most of the night. On the last day we stand at the ghats for the immersion, when every one of those figures returns to the water.
Why now
October — the five days of the Puja — and not the rest of the year
Nothing about this survives the week. The pandals are dismantled, the idols dissolve in the Hooghly, and the artists who made them start again for next year. Come to Kolkata in November and you will find a fine city with none of this in it — the studios empty, the lanes ordinary. UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2021, and what it recognised was precisely this: an art form that is rebuilt from nothing and destroyed on purpose, every single year.

Etiquette & consent
This is a living religious festival, not a performance. Photograph the pandals freely; ask before photographing worshippers, and never during the immersion. Remove shoes where indicated, and do not enter the sanctum of a household puja unless invited.
