BuDa — the beginning, the ground, the base
“BuDa” in Kannada stands for the beginning, the ground and the base. Everything is built upon that base.
BuDa is a unit of the ‘Janapada Vishwa Pratishtana’ trust and has been rooted in a strong tradition of research combined with traditional knowledge and folklore that continues today.
BuDa Folklore presently operates out of two locations: Honnavar and Angadibail (Ankola). The programmes are conducted at either of these locations to experience the life and the culture of the local community, and to understand the interrelationship between people and nature in each place.
BuDa Folklore believes in the experiential learning philosophy, and has designed each of its programmes so that one can experience the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Uttara Kannada coastal belt — to come, enjoy the festivals and initiatives, go back to slow living and travel down the memory lane of the region.

The art
Reconnecting with cultural heritage and ecological diversity can lead to sustainability, resilience and a more harmonious future.
Diversity
Cultural diversity is deeply tied to ecological diversity.
Local wisdom
The food we eat, the crafts we make and the stories we share are essential to our cultural identity and sustainability.
Education beyond four walls
The wisdom of the people and the life around the seasons are as important as academic subjects.
Every voice matters
The wisdom of farmers, basket weavers and tribal elders is equal to academic knowledge.
From the family archive

We are building a one-of-a-kind centre dedicated to documenting and archiving the folklore of Uttara Kannada — a museum, library and archives to serve as a hub for learning and cultural revival.
We collaborate with local tribes, basket weavers, farmers and artisans as resource persons, so that their skills and knowledge are valued and passed down to future generations.
BuDa Folklore works under the guidance of Janapada Vishwa Pratishtana while independently conducting educational and experiential programmes.
Founded in 2006, Janapada Vishwa Pratishtana is a non-governmental organisation registered under the Indian Trust Act, dedicated to the conservation, development and promotion of the cultural and natural environment of the Uttara Kannada region. It researches, documents, revives and protects the ethnic culture, traditions, arts and crafts of the region in an ecologically and socially sustainable manner.
The founding trustees' work has resulted in 80+ published books, a folklore museum and a folk medicinal garden, and a centre for folklore research with a vast collection of rare photographs, video and audio. They started one of the first folklore publications, “Janapada Prakashana”, in 1982.
